Two highly recommended excursions from Salobreña

Calahorra Castle is recommended by National Geographic. It is located in the small town of La Calahorra, located on the north face of Sierra Nevada, in the Granada region of Guadix and surrounded by a landscape of unusual and disturbing beauty. Its beauty is such that the enclave has been used on various occasions to shoot movies and television series such as the recent Casa del DragónAt the same time, the author highlights its silhouette and its location since it has “its foundations nailed to a hill and in the time of Arab rule, protecting the fortress with four circular watchtowers at the corners.” On the other hand, he speaks of the contrast in the distinguished decoration of its interior since “the building was a pioneer in the introduction of the Renaissance style in Spanish civil architecture. It was, in fact, the first major monumental project in which Italian architects participated. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, at the request of the Marquis del Zenete as a gift to his young wife, the state of conservation of this Renaissance castle-palace is excellent, which led to its being declared a National Historical Monument”.

To complete the list, he also talks about emblematic places such as the Alcazaba de Almería, Alcazaba de Málaga, Niebla in Huelva, Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla in Carmona, Castellar de la Frontera, Vélez Blanco in Almería Burgalimar and the Alcaudete Castle in Jaén.

The town recommended by National Geographic is Iznájar, full of flowers, in the province of Córdoba, an hour and a half from Salobreña. It is a very small town of only 4,000 inhabitants. Among its charms, Iznájar has an interesting history of its emblematic reservoir from the 60s, wonderful views from which to admire the Sierra de las Ventanas or historical places such as the 17th century Arab castle that names the municipality. And let's not forget about gastronomy!
